Though we are all attending this virtual conference from diverse Indigenous territories, we acknowledge that the University of Guelph resides on the treaty lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit. We recognize that today this gathering place is home to many First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and acknowledging them reminds us of our collective responsibility to the land where we learn and work.
Statement Regarding CAUT Censure
The Organizing Committee is aware of the recent decision by CAUT to censure the University of Toronto in response to an incident involving the University’s Law School over the administration’s prejudiced decision to cancel the hiring of Dr. Valentina Azarova. We are concerned about the decision and because we support academic freedom and the fundamental principal of universities remaining at arms distance from their benefactors. While the Conference does include one organizer from the University of Toronto among the six different institutions represented by the Organizing Committee, Between Postwar and Present Day is an online event that will be hosted by our platform provider Hopin, through the University of Guelph. Although the Conference Committee did receive a SSHRC Connections Grant to support this event, one whose institutional account is at the University of Toronto, this application was made long before this issue arose, and the University of Toronto is not the host of this event.
